FWCS won by stressing unity, academics; EACS didn’t

By Kevin Leininger of The News-Sentinel

Two years ago, when a News-Sentinel/WANE-TV poll asked likely voters whether they would support higher property taxes to improve public schools, the answer was clear: Fifty-seven percent said “no.”

And yet, on the same day earlier this month, 66 percent of Fort Wayne Community Schools voters approved a $119 million capital improvement plan that will add about $27 to the annual property tax bill for a house valued at $90,000 while 64 percent of voters rejected an $89 million referendum in the East Allen County Schools district.

So the obvious question is: Was the poll itself flawed, or does something else account for what happened May 8?

My educated guess is the latter, because FWCS presented a textbook study in how to persuade people to increase their own taxes even in a tough economy – and EACS gave voters reason to do the opposite.

Recently, the New Haven High School “Talented Tenth” male mentoring group attended the IPFW annual career day. The young men were able to learn about professions they are interested in majoring in at the collegiate level. The term “Talented Tenth” is to describe the likelihood of 1 in10 black men becoming leaders in today’s society. The twelve New Haven High male students were nominated by a staff member who recognized they had the ability to become a leader and/or mentor. Members will be added to the group on an annual basis.
The group will present several projects during the 2012-13 school year. The overseer of the group is Mr. Keith Edmonds, Assistant Principal.

Unfortunately Heatherwood Park has fallen victim to the Emerald Ash Borer. There are a total of 19 Ash trees and one Boxelder tree that have died and need to be removed. We were aware of the ash trees in the park last fall but were hoping that we would have several years to prepare for the worst but the condition of these trees turned terribly bad in the last six months. Bark was falling off, limbs were dropping and the parks department knew it was either remove the trees or close the park for safety reasons. The contractor is cutting down the trees and removing the limbs. To save money the park department will remove the stumps later this year when time allows. The parks department will start planning on tree replacement as funds become available. In the next month or so Allen County will have a contractor in the park debrushing along the creek similar to what happened along Moeller Rd.

The Indiana State Police are participating in Indiana’s 2012 “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

The seat belt enforcement campaign runs now through June 3.

This national campaign takes place over the Memorial Day holiday period and is supported by thousands of law enforcement agencies and traffic safety advocates across the country.

More than 25 law enforcement agencies in Indiana alone will be conducting special day and night patrols to ticket drivers and passengers who refuse to wear their seat belts.

Indiana’s seat belt usage rate has increased from 63% in 1995 to 93% in 2011 due to the “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

But still, in 2011, in Indiana, there were 3,322 crashes that involved drivers or occupants that were not wearing seat belts and, of those, 202 fatalities.

Statistics show wearing your seat belt increases your chances of surviving a crash by more than 50%.

Drivers will see more law enforcement on the roads during this 15-day period. Special patrols will be around the clock. Drivers can expect to get a ticket if driving without wearing their seat belt.

According to the Indiana State Police, there are no excuses or exceptions.

EACS READ 180 STUDENTS AWARDED FOR TREMENDOUS GROWTH!
As a means of celebrating the tremendous growth demonstrated by the students in EACS middle school Read 180 classes, the students were taken to a Tin Caps game that featured many schools as their special guests for the day. The expected gain over the course of the year for a student in Read 180 is 100 points in Lexile scores. Many of the EACS students in the Read 180 programs have demonstrated growth that is 3 – 4 times the expected gains! This field trip provided those hard working students with the positive reinforcement they deserve for their improvement in reading! Tickets to the game were provided at no cost to the students as well as a hot dog, bag of chips, and a drink that the students had for lunch. Great job, hard-working students and teachers!
