On Saturday September 29th, 2012 the 6th Annual Sample New Haven was held on Broadway on a lovely autumn afternoon.  For just $2.00, taste testing tickets were available to the public outside of the Post Office, allowing participants to feast on a virtual feast of samples from some of New Haven’s finest eateries.  Participants could also participate in a Stop-n-Shop scavenger hunt by visiting local businesses to collect clues to be used in deciphering a secret message.  Those who correctly guessed the secret message were then entered to win a prize in a drawing sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

At the Broadway Deli, owners Dan and Renee Moore were passing out samples of a delicious enchilada soup and cake balls.  A little further down the street, Curves owners Dave and Mickey Hill were making balloon animals and passing out goodies to the youngsters in attendance.

Outside of the Navy Club, volunteer Paul Knoblaucher was passing out pizza samples fresh from the kitchen along with information about the Navy Club.  The Navy Club’s kitchen is open to the public, and the public is welcome to attend featured entertainment by area bands on Saturday night.

New kid on the block, Andy’s Knock-Out Chicken, proved to be popular with the Sample New Haven taste testers on Saturday.  Owners Mark and Laurie Anderson passed out samples of their tasty chicken, ribs, and potatoes until running out around 1 pm.  Never fear, though–beginning on October 18th, you’ll be able to grab carry-out Andy’s Knock-Out Chicken from their new location on Broadway most days of the week!

Domino’s Pizza shared slices of its new pan crust pizza with the crowd .

Richard’s Restaurant set up a temporary location on Broadway to pass out samples of warm vegetable soup, creamy potato soup, and my son Alex’s very favorite, pumpkin pie.

The Bulldog Pub was busy serving up a veritable feast outside of their location on Broadway consisting of tacos, beans, rice, tortilla chips and a zippy freshly made salsa.

At the New Haven Bakery, owners Nancy and Katie Branning were passing out several different varieties of flavored donut holes and an enticingly scented warm apple cider.

Over at Carousel Ice Cream, who participated in the Sample New Haven event for the first time this year, the shop was bustling with taste testers enjoying either a small scoop of Carousel’s homemade ice cream or Italian ice.  Personally, I tried the mint chocolate chip and it was delish!

Providing entertainment at the event was DJ Double K, Kevin Kohrman, who played an upbeat mix of music from the downtown gazebo for taste testers to enjoy as they strolled along Broadway.  The TAG art company was also on site face painting and drawing caricatures for the children.

Businesses participating in the scavenger hunt included Carousel Ice Cream, New Haven Bakery, Bulldog Pub, Brian’s Barber Shop, Ruhl’s Furniture, Peter Franklin Jewelers, Domino’s, Computer Crack A Jack, Navy Club, Broadway Deli, Bob’s Barber Shop, and Forever Friends.
