Catholic Charities Leads Homework Help Program Volunteers Help Local Refugees
Catholic Charities, a United Way of Allen County agency partner, has taken over the Homework Help program, formerly known as the Neighborhood Action Center. Homework Help volunteers help refugee children with homework to assist in easing their transition in schools and the community. Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) programming is also offered two days per week. “We were pleased to be able to keep this program in place,” said Debra Schmidt, executive director at Catholic Charities. “Homework Help is available to refugee students with East Allen County Schools and Fort Wayne Community Schools and helps make the relocation to our community an easier one.” “The work of the Neighborhood Action Center was very important to our community, especially the large Burmese population in Fort Wayne,” said Jeanne Zehr, director of community impact at United Way of Allen County. “We’re so grateful Catholic Charities was able to pick up this program, now called Homework Help, and continue the great work being done.” United Way provided a gift of $15,000 to help transition the program to Catholic Charities. The program started October 1, 2012 and student enrollment began October 9, with nearly 80 students signing up in the first two days. Classes began October 11 and enrollment is still open to those needing services. Homework Help offices are located at 2019 Carterton Drive in Fort Wayne and the hours are Monday through Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Adult ESL classes are offered Monday and Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the same location. Anyone interested in receiving Homework Help services or volunteering with the program should contact Ocleva Williams at 422-5625 extension 234.
There are several organizations that provide volunteers and resources to Homework Help: 4-H Purdue Cooperative Extension, Anthis Career Center, Early Childhood Alliance, Fellowship Missionary Church, IPFW, The Reclamation Project, Southwest Lutheran Church and United Way of Allen County.
