Stepping into The DeHayes Group office on Broadway Street, you will be greeted with smiles and a homey atmosphere, which can include the delightful aroma of popcorn, popped in a pop corn machine located in their waiting room. The DeHayes Group was founded in 1982 by David DeHayes. The DeHayes Group began as a commercial property-casualty insurance agency and grew rapidly. Mr. DeHayes passed away in May of 2005. At that time Bill Rush, who was an agent with the agency, purchased the DeHayes Group.

Through acquisition and continuing sales efforts, The DeHayes Group has expanded into:

- Retirement and Financial Services
- Farms and Agricultural Business
- Group Benefits

Nick Groves

Nick Groves, Insurance Agent, and Manager of the New Haven Office said, “We are still a locally owned independent agency. We encompass all areas for our clients. We can be a one stop shop for all of their insurance and financial needs.”

Groves is a graduate of Indiana University, Bachelor of Science – Accounting. He has thirteen years experience in the insurance industry as an Account Executive; the last 11 have been with The DeHayes Group. Groves received his Certified Insurance Counselor designation in 1998 and completed his Compliance Check training in 2002. He has an extensive background in the placement, marketing, and management of commercial property and casualty and employee benefits insurance.

You might think of The DeHayes Group as a typical insurance agency, but Groves said, “We are not really an insurance company. We consider ourselves risk managers.”

The DeHayes Group guides their clients through the tough choices and gives them options into what insurance would work best for their needs. Being an independent agency and having more than twenty five carriers they can give their clients a smorgasbord of options to see what best fits their company. After considering all of the options, The DeHayes Group then helps develop a carefully-considered plan of action for their client. As an intermediary working strictly on their clients’ behalf, they assume the role of watchdog: actively seeking areas of improvement in price, product and service while monitoring the ever-changing governmental and industry trends.

“As risk managers for our clients”, said Groves, “we also offer other value services. We can help our clients and prospects with setting up employee manuals, help them with COBRA administration, help them with FMLA, and help with HIPA coordination. We do these services free of charge simply as part of what we consider our risk management job for our clients.”

At this time The DeHayes Group has three locations in the area. Their East location is in New Haven, located on Broadway Street. They also have a Southwest location on West Jefferson Blvd. and a Northwest location on Coldwater Road at Pine Valley.

The DeHayes group just came to New Haven in 2012, but they had been planning to place an office in New Haven for over three years prior to that time, according to Groves. He said, “First we have a lot of clients in this area and we wanted to grow in this area. Also, our commercial business is not as concerned about location as some of our other services. Location is more important when dealing with property and casualty, personal lines, farm business, employee benefits division, senior benefits division, and financial services as well. In New Haven we wanted to primarily focus on personal and farm business.”

Health insurance is going to be a big concern for many businesses in the upcoming year.  The DeHayes Group has already begun to proactively address this concern. In March they had a seminar which dealt with the private and public health insurance exchanges. Groves said, “There are still a lot of unanswered questions as to how the health exchanges are going to work, that means our clients are going to need us more than ever to help them navigate through the new Affordable Healthcare Program.”

The DeHayes Group as a whole has been a Chamber member since 2010. The biggest benefit they have received from membership is meeting with other business leaders. “I started working with the Ambassadors”, Groves said. “Being an Ambassador has helped me become more familiar with the New Haven Businesses. It is an interesting way for me to see businesses that I may not have been aware of before.”
