The New Haven Adams Township Fire Department is gearing up for a very special event to help raise much needed funds to support our local firefighters on July 13th, 2013 at Whispering Creek Golf Club.  If you like to play golf, and you want to support New Haven’s fine firefighters in all of their endeavors to spread the word about fire prevention and safety, then this story is for you!

According to Terry Smith, a local firefighter who is helping to organize this year’s event, the charity golf outing will tee off on July 13th at 1 pm at Whispering Creek with a dinner to follow immediately following the event at the club.  Registration is $50 per participant, and all of the funds raised will go to benefit the NHAT fire prevention and safety awareness education efforts in the New Haven area.  Smith says that equipment and supplies are needed on an ongoing basis to be able to support the firefighters as they go out into the community to the different schools to teach about fire safety and prevention.

One of the areas that our local firefighters stress is fire safety and prevention, and according to information from the National Fire Protection Association, firefighters want residents to know that unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires.  Two out of every 5 home fires begin in the kitchen, more than double any other area of the home, and they are also the leading cause of home-fire related injuries.

Among the fire prevention tips that firefighters and safety advocates recommend to fireproof your kitchen from an accidental fire include:

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling, or boiling food.
  • If you must leave the room, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you.
  • If you have young children, use the stove’s back burners whenever possible. Keep children and pets at least three away from the stove.
  • When you cook, wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves.
  • Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags, towels, and anything else that can burn, away from your stovetop.
  • Clean up food and grease from burners and stovetops.

Any additional funds that are raised by the Golf Outing that are not used to fund the firefighters fire prevention and safety awareness education activities will be used to financially support the training and equipment needs of our New Haven-Adams Township firefighters, said Smith.

To register for the Golf Outing on July 13th, stop by the NHAT Fire Department Headquarters in New Haven located at 910 Hartzell Road, New Haven or contact Terry Smith at 260-580-0547.
