On Thursday, July 4th, Friday, July 5th and Saturday, July 6th, 2013, New Haven resident Josey Smith participated in the 2013 National American Miss Pageant (NAM) held at the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis.  Josey is the 12 year old daughter of Matt and Kelly Smith of New Haven.

While a participant in the statewide National American Miss Pageant, Josey vied for a crown in the Pre-Teen division of the competition.  Unlike a typical beauty pageant, however, participants in the NAM pageant are judged on how well they introduce themselves to the judges, poise and formalwear/on stage appearance, communication skills during an interview, and their participation in a community service project during the weekend of the NAM Pageant.

Thankfully, no bathing suits or questions like, “If you could be either fire or water, which would you be and why?” allowed.  (I admit, you have to love preposterous questions like that with no real answer and the frequently humorous responses they tend to generate on the fly; just not so much when dealing with young girls at a tender age like Josey.)

Backstage prior to the Grand Finale at the conclusion of Saturday’s festivities, Josey told me that she really enjoys participating in the NAM Pageant, and it has helped her to become a more confident young woman being on stage in front of an audience.

“Being in the pageant has helped me to learn about myself, and to express myself more confidently,” said a calm and confident Josey.  She added that this is at least the third year she has participated in the NAM Pageant.

I would definitely agree that Josey is one confident young lady; earlier this summer, I watched in awe as she graced the New Haven Canal Days stage performing a routine she choreographed to One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ for the  1st Annual New Haven’s Got Talent Show.

I’m quite certain celebrity guest judges Komet Kaleigh Schrock and Sportscaster Kent Hormann would agree with me that Josey’s one confident young lady.  Judge Schrock, who has previously coached Josey at hockey clinics, said of her Canal Days performance, “Josey, you dance like you play hockey.  You are confident, tough, have style, and are fun.”  Judge Hormann added, “I love your energy.  You’re a confident young lady!”

Josey’s confidence definitely shined through in Indianapolis on Saturday, as she came home with multiple trophies and awards from the NAM pageant.  Josey’s father, Matt Smith, told me that the most prestigious award Josey received on Saturday was the NAM American Spirit Award for receiving 5 or more points in the following optional competitions:  Top Model Search, Actress (recorded a commercial for SunnyD),  Talent (danced to Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’), Most Photogenic, and Casual Wear Modeling.

Now that the NAM pageant is over for another year, Josey will undoubtedly be getting ready to head back to the not so glamorous and glitzy world of New Haven Middle School.  While no runways, grand ballrooms, or formal wear will be required at NHMS, Josey’s bright and beautiful smile, outgoing personality and confident attitude will most certainly be an asset to the school in the coming year!
