VERNA E. ZINK, 88, of New Haven, died on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Ashton Creek Nursing Home, Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Alvina (nee Ewell) Meyer. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Gar Creek, New Haven, where she was active in the Ladies Aid, Mums Night Out and Gamma Nu Sorority. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for nine years and with the Fort Wayne Police Department Victims Assistance Program for over 21 years, and received an award from WANE TV for her work there. She worked several years as an accounting clerk for General Electric. She was a catcher for Uhlig’s Machine Shop’s softball team and was on 1944 state finalist team and the 1947 city championship team, and she played on the City Lights 43-44 city championship basketball team. She is survived by her children, Cindy (Patrick) Maley of White House, Tenn. and Curtiss (Sharon) Zink of Fort Wayne; sister, Imogene (Elmer) Schumm of New Haven; brother, Howard (Sharon) Meyer of Angola; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Wayne Zink; daughter, Carmen Zink; and brothers, Lester and Eugene Meyer. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Saturday March 15, 2014, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Gar Creek, 1910 N. Berthaud Road, New Haven, with calling one hour prior to service. Calling also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne. Burial in the church cemetery.
