On Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, we hope to pack 80,000 meals at Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School, 11565 N US Highway 27, Decatur, Indiana to benefit the Kids Against Hunger campaign.  Kids Against Hunger is a nonprofit organization, founded more than 30 years ago, that created a food mixture consisting of rice, soy, vitamins, minerals, and dehydrated vegetables.  The food mixture is easy and safe to transport, simple to make with only boiling water, and culturally acceptable worldwide.  If you would like to know more about this non-for-profit organization, you can go to their website, www.kah-greenwood.org.

Three-fourths of the meals packed will remain in Adams, Wells, and Allen Counties.  The remaining fourth will be distributed internationally.  Guatemala received meals last year; and is also this year’s recipient through the “Mission Guatemala” partner network.  Thus far, the following food pantries have expressed interest in receiving the meals:  Decatur Church of God, St. Marks United Methodist, St. Joe (Hessen Cassel) Food Pantry, Hope United Methodist, The Lord’s Table Food Pantry in Geneva, Project Share-Berne,  Immanuel House (Caring and Giving), Decatur Operation Help, and Wells County Food Pantry.  We will also distribute meals to after school back pack programs, at North Adams, Adams Central, South Adams and Wells County.   If you know of other food pantries or back pack programs in Adams County, Wells County, or southern Allen County who might be interested, please contact Jan Buuck  at 260-639-3380.

The need for these meals is just as great now as it was last year.  If you are interested in donating funds to help offset the $20,000 needed to make our goal, please make your check payable to Kids Against Hunger and mail it to:  Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Friedheim, Attn:  Kids Against Hunger, 10653 N 550 W, Decatur, IN  46733.  Any checks should be mailed no later than April 4, 2014.

On Friday, April 11, we will have student volunteers from 6 local elementary schools working in fellowship together during the day to pack meals to benefit others in their communities; students participating in this volunteer effort are from Bethlehem Lutheran School, Ossian, St. John-Emmanuel Lutheran  School, Monroeville, St. Peter-Immanuel Lutheran School, Decatur, Central Lutheran School, New Haven, Zion Lutheran School, Decatur and Wyneken Lutheran School, Decatur.  On Saturday, April 12, we will need 120 volunteers for our packing that day.  The shift runs from 9:00am to 11:30 a.m. in the morning. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to volunteer with their children and work on a project together.  (Last year we had some families bring 3 generations to pack meals.)  Whether you are 8 or 80 or somewhere in between, there is a job for you!  If you would be willing to volunteer, please contact Lin or Joe Gorman by e-mail (linogorman@gmail.com) or phone (260-547-4385) by April 4.

We are looking for musicians for the event.  To add to the festivities of the day, we would like to have a “Praise Band” or individual play Christian and some patriotic music throughout the day.  If we have more than one group or individual volunteer, we may combine the groups or we may have one group play during the morning session; a second group, during the afternoon session.  If you have anyone who would be willing to volunteer their talents, please contact Jan Buuck (260-639-3380)
