REV. WYN BRYAN MAXEY, 90, of New Haven, and formerly of Defiance and Weston, Ohio, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014, at his home. Bryan, the last of nine children, was born on April 16, 1924, in Portland, Oregon to Robert Tibbs Sr. and Maude (Bryan) Maxey. He was the son of a minister who served for 50 years in the Christian church. He attended grade school in Circleville, Ohio, and graduated from high school in Truman, Minnesota in 1942. He is a World War II veteran and served in the United States Army. He married Kathryn Mae Cheney April 7, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 2002. Bryan graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary in 1948 and from Milligan College in 1952. He served as the minister for the Jamestown Christian Church in Kentucky from 1948 to 1957 where he was ordained in 1948. He also served as minister at the Weston Church of Christ from 1957 to 1967, and the Defiance Church of Christ from 1967 to 1986. Following his retirement, he served as an interim minister in fifteen churches throughout Ohio and Indiana. He also served as a volunteer chaplain of the Defiance County Caring Way Hospice. He delivered his first sermon while in high school in 1942 and has since ministered for 66 years. He served on the board at Great Lakes Bible College and was also a board member for Lake James Christian Assembly in Angola, Ind. He married Dorothy Louise Ernst on Nov. 28, 2004 and she survives along with four sons, Robert (Jane) of Louisville, Ky., John (Judy) of Bowling Green, Ohio, David (Joyce) of Defiance, Ohio, and Stephen (Deborah) of Defiance, Ohio; a daughter, Mary Kathryn, died in infancy; eight grandchildren, Kirk (Cara), Rob, Tim, Chip, Kara, Natalie, Will, and Kyle; as well as three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Koby, and Brody; also surviving are Dorothy’s daughters, Judy, Jo, Rusty, and their families. He is preceded in death by his mother and father; and eight siblings. A Celebration of Life is 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the Defiance Christian Church, 955 Standley Road, Defiance, Ohio, with calling one hour prior. Visitation also from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014 at Schaffer Funeral Home, 529 Jefferson Ave., Defiance, Ohio. The family suggests memorials be made to The Caring Way Hospice of Defiance.
