William Wicker receives a pin in honor of his service

On Monday, September 29th, 2014, Genesis Healthcare in New Haven took time out to recognize those who gave a portion of their lives in service to the United States of America.  More than 25 veterans, who are all currently residents at Genesis Healthcare, were recognized from each branch of service:  the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and National Guard.

New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald gave the opening remarks at the ceremony, in which all of the veterans received a pin and a certificate.  Tom Didier led the large crowd that was assembled in the Dining Hall in a beautiful rendition of “God Bless America”.

William Wicker, a United States Army veteran who served in World War II, was openly moved to tears as Didier sang “God Bless America”.  Wicker said that he loves America, and is proud to have served during the great war.

Following the pinning ceremony, residents and those in attendance at the ceremony were treated to snacks and entertainment.
