VIRGIL R. HOEPPNER, 91, passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at Golden Years Homestead, Fort Wayne with his loving family by his side. Born in Fort Wayne, he was the son of the late Hilda (Waltke) Hoeppner. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Woodburn. The U.S. Army veteran served his country in World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 377 and Howard Bandelier Jr. VFW Post 2457. He retired in 1977 from International Harvester after 30 years. He volunteered at Parkview Hospital and also the VA Hospital for almost 20 years. He was also a member of the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He is survived by his children, Susan (John) Ehle of New Palestine, Robert (Nancy) Hoeppner, Richard (Naomi) Hoeppner, Norm (Jan) Hoeppner, and Brian (Karen) Hoeppner all of Woodburn; brother, Donald (Elsie) Hoeppner of Woodburn; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice in 1988; brother, Gerald Hoeppner; grandson, Jeffrey Hoeppner; and special friend, Mary Dillon. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, at Christ Lutheran Church, 4412 Park St., Woodburn with calling one hour prior to the service. Pastor Tim Edwards officiating. Calling also from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven. Burial in church cemetery with military honors.
