RICK WELSH, passed away Friday night, Nov. 6, 2015, with his wife Sandy at his side. He was born April 3, 1948, and lived most of his life in Muncie, before moving to the Fort Wayne/ New Haven area in 2007. He worked for American Heritage Trails Bus Company for the last ten years as a Charter Bus Driver traveling to many states and met hundreds of new people of which he became friends with along the way. His most prized friendship was the Indiana Tech Women’s basketball team where they became like surrogate granddaughters to him. He drove them to all their basketball games over the last seven years and rooted them on whether they won or lost. “Keep your chin up.” His love of sports started in school where he played baseball and basketball, and following graduation from Harrison High School in 1966 went on to bowl in many different leagues and tournaments. He was proud to umpire little league and Babe Ruth baseball for many years, participate in old timer’s basketball, and lead the Eaton, Ind. Boy Scout troop. With arm chair coaching and yelling at refs, he was a true sports fan; even when Nascar came on. His driver of choice was Jeff Gordon. Telling him they couldn’t hear him didn’t matter. It was who he was. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sandy Newman Welsh; daughters, Misti (David) Smith of Mount Holly, N.C.; B.J. (Erin McMenamin) Welsh of Philadelphia, Pa.; granddaughters, Brianna and Mikayla Smith; two sons; six brothers; two sisters; and several other family members. Service is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at D.O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road, Fort Wayne, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers consider donating to the Indiana Tech Athletics Women’s Basketball Fund.
