Helen Marie Jolly was born to Elzie and Lydia (Lydie) Jolly in Cowan, Kentucky in 1926. Hers was a hard-scrabble farm family with 12
mouths to feed, 11 when younger sister Juanita died at age 2. The remaining children were Geneva, Helen, Juanita, David, Mae, Herbert, Virginia, Charlie, Raymond, and Faye. Mae, Herbert, Charlie and Faye are still with From her Kentucky roots Helen saw a lot of the USA. Seeking employment at age 16, she joined Geneva and their aunts Peggy (Rosie) and Nellie in the factories of Dayton during the war. Later, as a waitress at Culp’s Cafeteria, Helen met a former prisoner of war, Charles William (Charlie) Steele, who later graduated from the University of Dayton and was employed by National Cash Register (NCR). Helen and Charlie were married in 1947. Three sons were born to the couple in Dayton: Charles William Jr. (Bill) in 1948, Richard Allan (Dick) in 1952, and James Edward (Jim) in 1954. Charlie’s work took the family to Georgia and California, and back to Dayton where daughter Elizabeth Ann (Lisa) was born in Centerville in1958. Helen worked as a stay-at- home mom while the kids were young and later drove a school bus. In 1966 the family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where she was employed by Motor Parts and Equipment in New Haven. The couple divorced in 1971. Helen married Dean Krauter of New Haven in 1972 and they bought a house on Main Street, raising grandson Brian there. She and Dean divorced in 1983 but Helen stayed in New Haven. She moved near Lisa in West Chester, Ohio in 1998, following her to Richmond, Kentucky. Helen lived for a short time with her sister Virginia in Ohio and spent her last six years in Groveland, Massachusetts where son Jim and his family cared for her in her own home. She died in nearby Amesbury. Helen was a great beauty as a young woman. She is remembered for her humor, her warm laughter, and her courtesy to those who cared for her. She lived in eight states. The family had many pets but, in her last years, Helen was  inseparable from her beloved canine companion Maggie. She is survived by her four children, their spouses and partners, 12 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She will be interred near her parents at Longview Cemetery, Bethel, Bath County, Kentucky on June 20 th , 2016 at 3 PM. A hosted reception will follow at Locust United Methodist Church, 4428 Days Mill Rd., Hillsboro KY. Helen was a wonderful and very colorful person and is much missed by her family and friends.
