The Allen County Extension Homemakers partnered with the Allen County 4-H Junior Leaders to collect plastic caps and lids to be processed into benches for use outside the Home and Family Arts building on the Allen County Fairgrounds.  800 pounds of plastic caps and lids were collected for the two benches in six months’ time.  The adults and youth then sorted and bagged the caps ready for delivery to Green Tree Plastics in Evansville, IN.  When the caps and lids were delivered the benches were picked up.

The dedication ceremony is Saturday, July 23 at 3:00 pm in front of the Home and Family Arts Building on the Allen County Fairgrounds. Tony Burris of the Solid Waste District will share comments on the success of such a program to reduce the amount of waste into the local landfill.  Marilyn Long, Allen County Extension Homemaker President and the Allen County Junior Leaders’ representative will present the benches to the Allen County Fairgrounds Board President, Jerry Hammon and offer comments.  This presentation is prior to the opening of the Allen County Fair, July 26-July 31.

The bench donations are one of several events the Allen County Extension Homemakers are doing in 2016 in recognition of their 100th anniversary as an organization.  They held a gala celebration in May with a formal luncheon, table displays, moderated history presentation and Eric Olson as key note speaker.  They have the printed version of the history available for purchase at $ 12.00.  They also reprinted their cookbook, ‘Family Favorites,’ which supplements their scholarship fund for high school seniors entering Purdue University or IPFW in the College of Health and Human Sciences and are selling them for $ 15.00.   Items are available at the Allen County Extension Office and at the Allen County Fair.  They will also have a history display in the Home and Family Arts building during the Allen County Fair with the Open Class Exhibits they sponsor for adults.
