Diane Elaine Schaper, 60, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at her residence surrounded by her family after a fierce battle with cancer. She was born in Defiance, OH on July 15, 1956, and was the daughter of the late Ruth (Mohr) McDonald and Wayne Vogelsong. As a devoted sports fan (the Hoosiers, Cubs, and Colts amongst her favorites), Diane had a passion for coaching others in all aspects of life. To countless numbers of junior high sports teams, she was simply Coach Vogie. She spread her knowledge to all kids who would listen – especially cup stacking. She spent her entire career as a physical education teacher, including the last 23 years for East Allen County Schools, before retiring in the spring of this year. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Woodburn, being a member of the Altar Guild there. Diane lived life to the fullest by staying active, including biking and walking every single day, gardening, and spending every ounce of time she could with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Robert Schaper; sons, Kyle (Maria) Schaper of Columbus, OH, and Matt Schaper of Phoenix, AZ; siblings, Mike (Sue) Vogelsong of Apache, OK, Deb Smith of Defiance, OH, and Julie (Branko) Mijatovich of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Henry and Violet Schaper, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert, Roger, and Daniel Vogelsong, and her parents.

Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church, 7616 Bull Rapids Rd., Woodburn, with calling one hour prior to service. Pastor James Teasdale will be officiating. Visitation is also 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 SR 930 E., New Haven. The family suggests memorials to the Cedarville Elementary P.E. Playground Equipment Fund, or Ovar’coming Together, Inc.
