THE RIVER CITY RAT RACE 5k/10k OCTOBER 21 at 2:00 PM

The 19 th River City Rat Race 5K/10k was born in the year 2000 and became an instant success. With over 1100 runners and walkers and more than 100 volunteers, it was clear that this event had enormous potential. Last year’s event attracted over 1100 participants. The feature event 10k (6.2mi) race includes a beautiful downtown course. Author and senior writer Hal Higdon of Runner’s World magazine said: “It is one of the most scenic 10K courses I’ve ever seen. This is high praise coming from one of the most experienced and highly sought after running experts in North America. The race is held on a Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm and typically one of the last weekends near Halloween in October. We feel this is the best time for an event called the “RAT RACE.”

Although the race attracts the top area runners, we consider this a “fun run.”. We have many awards throughout the race also. We have age group awards for the top 3 in each age group of 5 year increments; we also have Best Costume and Middle of the Pack awards. Since the race started in 2000 we have donated over $129,000 to the Central Branch of the YMCA. The starting line for the race is at the corner of Main and Barr Street in Fort Wayne, and finishes at the Filtration Plant just east of the Old Fort for both the 5k and the 10k. Packet pickup is at the Central Branch YMCA on Oct. 20, from 5-7:30pm. Cash and check only for $35 if you register that night. Race day packet pickup is from 12:00-1:30 at the 1 st Source Bank located at 200 E. Main Street near the start line. Race day registration is available for $50.

Participants can register online at runsignup.com. For more information visit our website at rivercityratrace.com. or pick up a postcard at any YMCA in Fort Wayne and Columbia City.
