“Wine without Pretense” by Grape Enthusiast

Big Bottles!

This time of year it’s not uncommon to take a bottle of wine to a party or to give one as a hostess gift when invited to dinner.  It is also very popular to give a bottle of wine as a Christmas or Hanukkah gift.  I encourage these traditions.  For the giver it is easy to find a nice wine at a reasonable price.  There are a lot of cute wine gift bags to gussy it up or a big red bow around the neck is always nice, too.  The receiver is sure to be impressed and happy with not only the gesture, but the actual gift, as well.  At the risk of using an overused phrase, wine as a gift is a Win-Win situation.

Would you like to step it up a notch this year?  Got someone extra special you need to wow?  Do you want to set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd?  Consider a Big Bottle.  A standard bottle holds 750ml.  A fairly common size is the Magnum at 1,500ml or 1.5 liters and it is equal to two standard bottles.  Magnums are the first in the line of what in the industry is called “large format bottles”.  The next size is called the Jeroboam and holds 3.0 liters, which is equal to four standard bottles.  Trust me, if you show up to a New Year’s Eve party with a Jeroboam of champagne or Asti Spumante, heads will turn in your direction.  Here are the large format bottle names, sizes, and equivalents.

Capacity Name Equivalent Availability
1.5 liters Magnum 2 bottles commonly available
3.0 liters Jeroboam 4 bottles hard to find or Special Order
4.5 liters Rehoboam 6 bottles Special Order only
6.0 liters Methusaleh 8 bottles Special Order only
9.0 liters Salmanazar 12 bottles Special Order only
12.0 liters Balthazar 16 bottles Special Order only
15.0 liters Nebuchadnezzar 20 bottles Special Order only

Be sure to check with your favorite package liquor store or wine shop early so there’s time to order and receive your Big Bottle.  My 3 liter bottle of 2010 La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir is on the way and should be ready to take to the next Holiday Dinner we’ve been invited to.  Like they say, “Go Big or Go Home!”  Make this Holiday Season extra special with a Big Bottle.
