GEORGE J. DIRIG, 102, of New Haven, died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Provena Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. Born in Fort Wayne he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (nee. Steiger) Dirig. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, New Haven. He started working for C.V. Dirig Sheet Metal in 1923 and retired in 1973, after 50 years. In 2009 the sheet metal trade honored him for his 75 years of continuous service. He was the oldest living Sheet Metal Worker in the United States. Surviving are his children, Gene (Shirley) Dirig of Huntertown, Carl Dirig and Mary Louise (Tom) Crandall both of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Flora M., in 1995; daughter, Ellie Brandstetter; five brothers; and three sisters. Mass of Christian Burial is 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 943 Powers St., New Haven with calling one hour prior. Father James Seculoff officiating.
