World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine
Emanuel Lutheran Church Youth
New Haven students chose to fight hunger “ON AN EMPTY STOMACH”
for children worldwide

Wars and natural disasters all over the world dominate the daily headlines, but behind the scenes and far from the spotlight, hunger and preventable diseases claim the lives of 25,000 of the world’s children every day.
Right now, more than 1 billion people worldwide don’t have enough to eat. Annually, more than 9 million children under the age of 5 die from disease and malnutrition as a result of hunger. But world hunger is 100 percent preventable, and teens from Emanuel Lutheran Church are eager to be a part of the solution.
February 27th & 28th they joined the efforts of hundreds of thousands of young people all over the nation who set aside the usual “stuff” that fills their daily lives. Instead, they did World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine “ON AN EMPTY STOMACH” – the theme for this year. By going without food, they got a taste of what the world’s poorest children and families face every day. Prior to the event weekend, students raised funds with the knowledge that every $30 they raise can help feed and care for a child for a month.
As part of the Famine, Emanuel’s youth made fleece blankets and collected canned goods for the New Haven Food Bank in order to make a difference in the New Haven community.
Funds raised by 30 Hour Famine participants help feed and care for children in communities in need around the globe through World Vision. Additionally, a portion of the funds raised support World Vision’s efforts to assist families in need in the United States. Famine funds contribute to World Vision’s response in areas where famine, conflict, and other crises make children vulnerable to hunger and preventable disease. This year, Emanuel’s famine funds will be directed to Ethiopia. Since 2005, Emanuel’s 30 Hour Famine Teams have raised close to $19,000 plus received matching grants each year, representing approximately 87,000 kids fed. World Vision works in nearly 100 countries, helping approximately 100 million people every year.

St. John’s Hosts Fish Fries Throughout Lent
By: Deanna Quinn
To honor the traditions of the Lenten season, St. John’s New Haven will host fish fries on three Fridays of Lent. The fish fries are held in the cafeteria of the Community Center located on the corner of Powers and Ann streets and are open to the public. They will be held on Feb. 19th, March 5th, and March 19th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Meals are available for dine-in or carry-out. The cost for adults is $7.50, for 5-12 year-olds $4.00, and children under 5 are free.
Sponsored by the Holy Name Society, the fish fries raise money to fund the various improvement projects needed at the parish and school throughout the year. The parish recently used funds from this event to purchase and install the new cross on the front of the church.
